The hare coursing season is well underway again with multiple groups of coursers being reported from around the UK. Coursing is the pursuit of hares with sight hounds and was banned in the UK by the Hunting Act 2004. However it continues, illegally in areas with large areas of flat farmland suitable for hares, especially after the harvest. Criminals involved in these offences frequently travel long distances to course and are often involved in other rural and wildlife crime. They can be extremely threatening and violent when approached. Because these offences take place in rural areas police response can be patchy and slow so it is important to alert them to what is happening as soon as possible. Over the past few years Hare Coursing and the crime associated with it have reached epidemic proportions and need to be tackled urgently.
